Utilitas Wind has started construction of the Lode hybrid park in northern Latvia, bringing wind power and battery storage together in a project that will strengthen the Baltics’ energy security. TRINITI participated in the project’s legal due diligence, helping the company secure financing from a syndicate of three banks: SEB Pank, Swedbank and OP Corporate Bank.
The project will comprise 18 Vestas wind turbines with a combined capacity of 117 MW and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with 60 MW of power and 240 MWh of storage capacity. The wind farm is expected to generate approximately 330 GWh of electricity annually — equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 110,000 households. The hybrid park is scheduled to begin operations in early 2028.
To assess the project’s readiness for construction (Ready-to-Build), TRINITI reviewed environmental impact assessment documentation, permits required for the development of electricity generation capacity, building permits, and agreements governing building rights and easements. The legal review also covered agreements with Latvia’s transmission system operator, AS Augstsprieguma tīkls, Valmiera Municipality and other organisations involved in implementing the project.
The Lode hybrid park forms part of the wider Latvian–Estonian Utilitas Lode–Penuja cross-border renewable energy project, which holds Cross-Border Renewable Energy (CB RES) status. The project has also received funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). By combining wind generation with energy storage, the hybrid park will provide balancing capabilities for the Baltic electricity grid and strengthen the region’s energy security.
The TRINITI team was led by Managing Partner Uģis Treilons, working alongside Senior Experts Ēriks Blumbergs and Sandis Saulītis.
