China’s initiative in Central and Eastern Europe


On April 26 2012 China’s Prime Minister Wen Jiabao attended the China – Central and Eastern Europe Business Forum in Warsaw. He informed on a major Chinese government’s initiative aimed at increase of co-operation between China and the region.

China’s announced initiative will consist of:

  1. 1. a special credit line of US$10 billion together with a certain proportion of concessional loans which will be used to support the bilateral cooperation projects mainly in the fields of infrastructure, high-tech and green economy;
  2. special China – Central and Eastern Europe investment fund to encourage Chinese enterprises to build joint venture economic and technological parks with Central and Eastern European countries within the next 5 years;
  3. 5 000 scholarships to Central and Eastern European countries for 1 000 students to study Chinese in China and send 1 000 Chinese students and scholars to Central and Eastern Europe for study and exchanges within the next 5 years.

China has also invited the governments from this region to come up with individual investment projects as well as suggested creation of specific co-operation task forces to steer Chinese investment.
